The Narnia Experience
Liverpool Cathedral September 2006
The last week of September 2006 brought a Narnia transformation to Liverpool Cathedral for schools days and a Family Fun Day. Hundreds of school children were treated to workshops full of wonder and activity on the theme of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. They helped Mr Tumnus to choose the right thing to do by Lucy; they joined in with Peter’s battle; they sat in Mr Beaver’s cottage; they explored winter turning to spring and journeyed a wonderful interactive labyrinth. C.S. Lewis greeted each child in the Lady Chapel and some children came dressed up as evacuees! Lots of exciting crafts were taken back to school on the buses and so were presents given by Father Christmas who taught the children a Narnia chant to shout on the bus!
On the Saturday 3000 people of all ages entered the cathedral via the wardrobe full of fur to explore Narnia. Children made unicorns, Beavers, friendship bracelets, sequined hearts, Aslan badges and lots more while fitting in more workshops, puppets, a Lion Trail, the Snow Zone, Narnia Labyrinth and owl demonstrations. Narnia themed food was served and prizes given away through the day. Prayers were tied to balloons for the launch at the end and the White Witch appeared next to the Cair Paravel Tower to claim Edmund as her own! But Aslan was triumphant and, as encouraged and directed by Canon Jeremy Duff, we followed Aslan through the West Door to release the hundreds of balloons. They travelled as far as Cumbria and East Lothian.
‘Thank you’ just doesn’t seem enough words to express the gratitude to over 90 people who gave their time, support & prayers to this event. The fun, excitement and involvement everyone had was only made possible because of the wonderful writing of C.S. Lewis and the inspiration he gave us to use our imagination and tell the essential message that is our Lord Jesus Christ, and the fantastic team of volunteers. God bless you all. Till the next time……
